Dozens of law enforcement officers and firefighters descended on a Redwood City Target store Friday, bringing with them a crowd of excited children. The annual shopping trip, known as the “Shop with a Hero” event, is where deputies from the San Mateo Sheriff’s Department, police officers from local agencies, firefighters and others take local underprivileged kids shopping for the holidays. The kids get to choose which aisle to visit and what to buy. They also travel in a bus, accompanied by an escort.Participants are selected by the officers, who say they know the kids and their families can benefit from the program.“This is my first time doing the ‘Shop with a Hero,’” said San Mateo deputy Neydi Joachin. “It’s a good experience for me and for the kids, and it’s nice to see how they relax and enjoy the time with us.”The shopping spree was paid for with community donations, including money from the nonprofit Wine County Marines. The goals of the program are to give local underprivileged children some good holiday memories while helping officers build positive relationships in the community.
