Shane Hvizdzak jailed on alleged new fraud

Shane Hvizdzak was jailed Wednesday after a federal judge found he committed new fraud while awaiting sentencing in his cryptocurrency case. U.S. District Judge W. Scott Hardy revoked Hvizdzak’s bond following a three‐hour hearing in Pittsburgh, ruling that prosecutors showed probable cause that Hvizdzak, 38 this year, engaged in wire fraud while on release and that he failed to convince the court that he does not pose a danger to the community. Hardy said no release conditions would keep the public safe because Hvizdzak was unlikely to follow them. The ruling came five days after the U.S. Attorney’s Office filed a motion detailing new allegations from a woman who told investigators she had known Hvizdzak for 35 years.

According to the filing, Hvizdzak contacted her through encrypted messaging apps, encouraged her to share business finances and create cryptocurrency accounts he controlled. The motion includes text messages in which Hvizdzak claimed he made “almost $1.5 million a day” in cryptocurrency and sent the woman a screenshot showing her $60 investment had supposedly grown to $23,244.97, a 38,000‐percent increase.
