Sony’s Profit Jumps 45% as Games and Spider-Man Power a Stronger Outlook

Sony raised its annual operating-profit forecast after gains in games, films and music outweighed weaker console hardware sales.

Sony has delivered a reminder that selling fewer consoles does not necessarily mean a weaker games business. The Japanese group reported a 45% increase in quarterly operating profit, supported by games, network services and a powerful film contribution. It also raised its annual operating-profit forecast, offering investors a stronger outlook even as hardware demand and component costs remain important pressure points.

The headline numbers show growth across the group

In its official November 5 results announcement, Sony said revenue for the July-September quarter reached 3,429.4 billion yen, up 10% year on year. Operating profit was 622.3 billion yen, up 45%, while net income attributable to shareholders was 449.6 billion yen, up 44%. These are different measures: revenue captures sales, while operating profit reflects earnings from operations before the full range of items included in net income.

Sony raised its fiscal 2026 operating-profit forecast to 1,870 billion yen, a 9% increase from its July projection. The financial-services business is reported separately as a discontinued operation following the partial spin-off described in the announcement. That accounting context matters when comparing periods: readers should not assume that every historical group total represents exactly the same collection of continuing businesses.

Games profit grew much faster than games revenue

Game and Network Services revenue rose 9% to 1,208.5 billion yen, while the division’s operating profit increased 83% to 220.1 billion yen. Sony attributed the improvement to network services, stronger first-party and third-party software sales and favorable exchange-rate effects. The company also noted that the latest quarter did not repeat certain prior-year Bungie-related impairment and development-cost adjustment effects.

That last factor is important because an 83% profit increase does not mean underlying demand rose by the same percentage. The comparison reflects both business performance and a different expense base. Sony said those positive factors outweighed weaker console hardware sales. According to Reuters, Sony sold 2.6 million PlayStation 5 units during the quarter, compared with 4 million a year earlier. The results therefore show why software and services need to be read alongside unit shipments.

Spider-Man lifted the film business

Pictures revenue climbed 48% to 513.7 billion yen and operating profit rose 568% to 92.6 billion yen, according to Sony. The company identified theatrical revenue from “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” as a key driver. The very large percentage profit increase reflects a comparison with a much smaller prior-year result, so it should not be mistaken for an equivalent percentage increase in ticket sales.

The broader business lesson is that Sony’s entertainment operations can contribute at different points in a release cycle. In this quarter, a successful film materially improved the Pictures segment while games and network services were also stronger. That combination helped the group absorb softer performance elsewhere. It does not establish that each future quarter will benefit from a similarly powerful film release or the same mix of earnings drivers.

Music and sensors added support

Music revenue rose 10% to 598.4 billion yen, and operating profit increased 6% to 122.8 billion yen. Sony cited recorded-music performance and merchandise income, streaming revenue in recorded music and publishing, and favorable currency effects. These improvements helped offset a tough comparison in visual media and platforms after the previous year’s contribution from “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.”

The image-sensor business also improved profitability. Sony reported operating profit of 154.6 billion yen, up 12%, for Imaging and Sensing Solutions. A better product mix and exchange rates helped offset lower unit sales of image sensors for mobile products. Meanwhile, Entertainment, Technology and Services revenue declined 1%, although operating profit rose 5%. The group result is consequently a story of differing segment trends, not uniform growth in every product category.

What investors should watch after the upgrade

Higher memory costs remain a risk for the games business, Reuters reported, even as software demand offers an opportunity. Sony previously said in July that it had secured the memory needed for its projected sales volume this year. Securing supply, however, should not automatically be read as eliminating all cost pressure. Availability and profitability are related but separate questions.

The next results will help show whether stronger network services and game sales can continue to compensate for lower hardware shipments, and whether Pictures can sustain momentum after a major hit. For now, Sony’s upgrade rests on reported improvements across several entertainment businesses rather than on console volume alone. The quarter provides evidence of that diversified model at work, while leaving execution, release performance and input costs as the key tests ahead.
