Wrestler Who Deposed Hulk Hogan as ‘Greatest’ Pays Tribute

George Pimentel / WireImageDwayne “The Rock” Johnson has broken his silence on the death of his “childhood hero” Hulk Hogan in an emotional Instagram post recounting their encounters over their respective professional wrestling careers. “To millions of little kids you were a childhood hero – myself included,” Johnson wrote Friday. The Rock recounted that he was 12 years old when he caught Hogan’s famous “HULKSTER” headband during his match at Madison Square Garden and brought it back to him backstage. “You were shocked and so happy after the match because you told me that was your very last headband and if it weren’t for me, you’d have no way of getting that exact one made again,” Johnson wrote. Years later at 29, Johnson and Hogan faced off in the ring at WWE’s Wrestlemania event to decide “who would go down in history as The Greatest of All Time.” The match ended with Johnson defeating Hogan, but Johnson remembers the crowd was “ELECTRIC…all for” Hogan.

He wrote, “That historic crowd reaction was all for you,” adding, “You may have ‘passed the torch’ to me that night, but you, my friend… you ‘drew the house.’” Hogan, 71, died at his home in Florida on Thursday after a cardiac arrest. President Donald Trump paid tribute to the Hogan as “MAGA all the way.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dwayne Johnson (@therock)Read more at The Daily Beast.
